About the Artist

I started working in clay in the ‘70s and enjoyed throwing on the wheel for many years. Then I took a one-day workshop using colored clays in the Japanese tradition of nerikomi. I found that I loved the design possibilities of stacking colors of clay together and manipulating that brick of colors, then cutting through it to see what design was made this way. It is still exciting to see the results after many years of working this way.

I switched to hand building after this workshop so I could roll out these new designs into clay slabs of white stoneware.  These designs end up on the clay heart rattles I make, along with my asymmetrical sculptural pieces, and serving pieces.  I enjoy sitting down with pencil and paper to design new shapes. I have many favorite forms I’ve designed over the years and I am constantly playing with new color combinations that will enhance the shape.

I have a degree in Graphic Design from Portland State University in Oregon. Two books include photos of my work, Hand Built Ceramics and 500 Pitchers.
